International Black Cats Appreciation Day ( Aug 17 )
complete
Sengentaro Bloodwake
It’s National Black Cat Day on October 27th! Black cats need a little positive PR as their reputation as an omen of bad luck is well-known (and unearned, frankly). In the lead-up to Halloween, National Black Cat Day provides the chance for feline fans to show off their love for the oft-maligned, but always iconic animal.
Let's show these beautiful creatures the love they deserve.

And here are some of my own ideas for this stamp.
Using original artwork from a beautiful stamp I found. 5 colour variations, plus the original and the extracted inner cat artwork.

Haley George: Just one. His name is Erebus. And he says thank you.

What do you think if we have a global release on International Black Cats Appreciation Day ( Aug 17 ) instead of National Black Cat Day ( Oct 27, US only )? Any objection?
Sengentaro Bloodwake
That's perfectly fine with me! I didnt know there was an international black cats appreciation day!
uvlys
Shiro from Slowly: I think Internacional is really better, that way everyone can have that stamp!
Yann2
Sengentaro Bloodwake: Thank you, and big thank you to Shiro from Slowly for all the attention and care with our ideas and suggestions. You rock! 🌟😎🌞✨

Shiro from Slowly: International, please. Black cats are in demand all around the world. 😎
Lindsey Dorsey
Shiro from Slowly: Since I created the post, is there a way that I can edit it to make it international?
Shiro from Slowly
Lindsey Dorsey: I have updated the title to International Black Cats Appreciation Day ( Aug 17 ).
Yann2
Shiro from Slowly, thank you. That is wonderful.
Congratulations to Lindsey Dorsey also!

An update
I had collected a number of pretty Black Cat postage stamps, which I added in comments here. I am really glad to see how well supported this proposal has been, the 192 votes it has currently, the comments. ❤👍
Since I had the stamps on hand, I thought of making them the images on our
subReddit for SlowlyApp users
, and that's now up and running.I posted a topic there explaining the change, asking people to consider visiting here, and supporting this cause, our Black Cat friends are so lovely.
A quick search
...and I found a really nice reference page -
Why You Should Celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17th
."Since 2011, cat lovers around the world have celebrated Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17th. It is a day to celebrate and appreciate the black cats in your life. If you don’t already have a black-furred feline friend but have been thinking about adopting one, Black Cat Appreciation Day is an excellent day to visit shelters; many animal shelters, including the ASPCA, run adoption specials for black cats on this day."
The Wallis and Futuna stamp :
...shows an International Black Cat Appreciation Day.
So, maybe we could request that Shiro from Slowly could consider a request for this to be a GLOBAL issue, instead of only an USA special day commemorative as Sengentaro Bloodwake originally posted ?
Thank you for all the work you do, and for all the users supporting the proposals here in the site. Cheers! 🍀😀🌟
Shiro from Slowly
Yann2: Well, they seem carrying different messages. I am not sure. Let's keep it open and gather more ideas before we make a decision.
Maybe you can create a separate post for the Black Cat Appreciation Day you've mentioned?
Yann2
Shiro from Slowly: Thank you, and sure, we can take some time and see what's the best path.
This proposal has a lot of votes, and it's a worthy cause so I hope it can become a stamp. (I could certainly create a new proposal as well, if needed).
USA versus International event, rationales :
I think the idea of the International Black Cat Appreciation day is very similar to the one for the USA - National Black Cat Day (Oct 27) - which is to avoid stereotypes like 'bad luck' or 'witches cat' which make the black felines sometimes harder to be adopted.
From the CNN link above, partial quote :
"Many animal shelters struggle to find good homes for black cats.
“Black cats are adopted at a slower rate than regular cats,” Diana Nelson, a senior volunteer at The Lange Foundation in Los Angeles, California, told CNN. “They’re so sweet and they’re so beautiful, we can’t tell you why except that people have weird, old superstitions.”
Samantha Shelton, president and CEO of Furkids in Georgia, said black cats at her shelter are constantly being overlooked for the same reasons. “There is definitely misinformation associated with black cats and they are overlooked because of the long-standing stigma that surrounds them,” she told CNN."
-----
International Black Cats Appreciation Day :
The 'Black Cats Appreciation Day message is similar, but the date seems to be know in France and some other countries, as well as in the USA (the location of the link above).
"
Why Do They Need Their Own Special Day?
Black cats are often the least adopted and most overlooked cats in animal shelters, resulting in many of these wonderful animals being euthanized when they can’t find a loving home. Because they are less likely to be adopted from shelters, they need a special holiday in their honor to bring awareness to this issue, and to encourage people to adopt these amazing animals.
Black cats are often misunderstood and overlooked because of their coat color. There are several reasons why people looking to adopt a cat are less likely to adopt black cats."
A French language article on
LeSoir
from Belgium has similar content."On 17 August, we celebrate International Black Cat Day. This day comes just 10 days after International Cat Day, which is held every year on 8 August. Why separate these two days? Simply to raise awareness of the black cat cause and to encourage people to adopt black cats. The superstition that a black cat brings bad luck still pushes us in 2021 to stay away from them as soon as we come across one. But apart from the colour of their fur, what makes black cats so different and, more importantly, how can a simple cat be so emotionally charged? There are many reasons for this."
Sorry for this extensive reply/comment, but I wanted to collate the respective explanations and rationale for the events.
Thank you, Shiro! 🙂👍

Yann2: Interesting. However if releasing two black cat days seems a bit too much. 🤔

Yes, I agree fully. What I was asking is for this proposal and the stamp issue to go Global instead of USA only.
I might create another topic as Shiro from Slowly suggested, but that seems redundant. I am basically asking for the market coverage to be Global instead of one single country.
madcow.hk
Yann2: yes, it makes sense. international day > national day
Yann2
madcow.hk: Ah, great - glad you see it that way too.
Since it's an educational campaign, I think the wider the exposure, the better.
Yann2
Sengentaro Bloodwake, while we wait for some progress, I went looking and found some nice Black Cat real postage stamp images.
Adding here for inspiration, and maybe they help us get lucky - and the stamp accepted into production? 😀🐈
The Canada Post issue is lovely and rather along the same idea you outlined in this post. ('Choose Adoption')
