The Nazca Lines "Spirits in the sand" are a group of geoglyphs (large designs in the landscape) that cover about 50 km², found in the Nazca Desert, Peru. They were made from 200 BCE to 500 CE by removing the top layer of reddish-brown pebbles to reveal the yellow-grey subsoil, they are among archeology's greatest enigmas because of their quantity, nature, size, geometric precision and continuity.
Most lines run straight in the landscape, but there are also drawings of animals and plants, they are best seen from the air because some of them are several kilometers long, they are believed to have had ritual astronomical functions. There are monkeys, spiders, whales, hummingbirds, owls, and even a strange flying animal. More than 100 shapes have been found by the time.
They are "one of the most impressive-looking archaeological areas in the world" and the "most outstanding group of geoglyphs anywhere in the world and are unmatched in its extent, magnitude, quantity, size, diversity and ancient tradition to any similar work in the world".
The geoglyphs were rediscovered in 1920, when the first commercial flies between Lima and Arequipa overflew the zone, In 1994 they were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
My favorite geoglyph is the Hummingbird.
I'd like to see something like this:
But please comment. You can see more geoglyphs here:
