The Purple-crested turaco (Tauraco porphyreolophus) is the national bird of Eswatini, celebrated for its beauty and cultural significance. It is a medium-sized, fruit-eating bird, about 45 cm long, with a vivid green head, a striking purple crest, and iridescent purple-blue plumage on its wings and back. In flight, its bright crimson wing feathers flash dramatically, making it especially eye-catching. Native to southern and eastern Africa, it inhabits woodland and forest edges, where it plays an important ecological role as a seed disperser. Its resonant, barking call is also a distinctive feature of the species.
