In the 16th to 18th century German dancing consisted of a calm preliminary dance in common time and a faster subsequent dance in triple time. In the mid-18th century the subsequent dance became the so called „Deutsche“ - a folksy rotary dance for individual couples in 3/4 or 3/8 time. There are many compositions from popular musicians of that time: Haydn (35 Deutsche for orchestra), Mozart (50 Deutsche for orchestra), Beethoven (24 Deutsche for orchestra) and Schubert (more than 100 Deutsche for piano).
At the beginning of the 19th century the tempo accelerated and the Deutsche transitioned into the waltz. The German “national dance” became internationally established and the leading social dance of the 19th century. To this day the first dance of newlyweds is the slow waltz in Germany.
