It is situated on an island in the city's main lake, Lake Schwerin. The castle is regarded as one of the most important works of Romantic historicism in Europe, and is nicknamed the "Neuschwanstein of the North". In 2023, Schwerin Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
