[Guyana] Canje pheasant (Hoatzin), Guyana's national bird
NotRose
The Canje pheasant (Opisthocomus hoazin) is the national bird of Guyana, celebrated for its unusual appearance and unique biology. This striking bird has a spiky crest, long tail, and reddish-brown and buff plumage. Native to the swamps and riverine forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, it feeds primarily on leaves, which ferment in its specialized digestive system, giving it a distinctive odor, earning it the nickname “stinkbird.” Remarkably, its chicks are born with claws on their wings, allowing them to climb branches before they can fly, a trait reminiscent of ancient birds.
