Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights.
In 1981, activists at the Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encounters marked November 25 as a day to combat and raise awareness of violence against women more broadly. On December 17, 1999, the date received its official United Nations resolution. The date marks the brutal assassination in 1960 of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic.
Globally, an estimated 736 million women—almost one in three—have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life (30 per cent of women aged 15 and older).
603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime.
