Hachiko was a Japanese Akita dog, is remembered for his unwavering loyalty to his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno.
Hachiko waited Ueno on daily basis at Shibuya Station, Tokyo after his train commute from work, then walked home together.
In 1925 Ueno passed away. Hachiko would return to Shibuya Station everyday waiting for Ueno's return until his death 1935.
During his lifetime, the dog was held up in Japanese culture as an example of loyalty and fidelity.
In April 1934, a bronze statue based in his likeness was erected at Shibuya Station.
On March 9, 2015, the 80th death anniversary of Hachiko, a second bronze statue was erected in University of Tokyo. The beloved Akita Inu is happily reunited with his owner. It depicts a very excited Hachiko jumping up to greet Ueno at the end of a workday.
