[Kazakhstan] Zhamby atu
Agnes Dep
Zhamby atu is a festive competition of Kazakh warriors in marksmanship.
The tournament was held in three stages.
The first stage, "Shapshan atu" ("Quick shot"): a participant on horseback stands at the firing line and begins shooting at the command of the judge. 10 seconds are given for shooting.
The second stage, "Kalkan atu" ("Shooting at shields"): 3 targets are set up one after another at a distance of 35 meters; participants shoot at them while galloping along the firing line.
The final stage, "Zhamby atu": the conditions of the second stage are repeated, but the targets are suspended and located at a distance of 8, 10 and 12 meters from the firing line.
In 2017, the first international zhamby atu tournament “Altyn zhebe” (“Golden Arrow”) was held in Astana, in which 20 athletes from 11 countries took part.
