Missing European Castles (first batch)
Kazaah
As asked on the European Castles post for any omission, I created a new request :
Andorra : Castell de Sant Vicenç d'Enclar
is a medieval castle located near the village of Santa Coloma in Andorra. It dates back to the 9th century and served as a strategic defensive stronghold. Today, it is a well-preserved archaeological site and a popular tourist attraction.
Canary Islands : Castillo de San Jose
was built in-between 1776 and 1779. It was commissioned by King Carlos III of Spain to serve as a coastal defense fortress against pirate attacks. The castle's strategic location on a hill provided clear views of the coastline, enabling surveillance and protection of the area.
Faroe Islands : Skansin fortress
was originally built in 1580 by Magnus Heinason, a Faroese naval hero, to protect against pirate attacks. Over the centuries, it underwent several expansions and modifications. Skansin played a significant role in defending the Faroe Islands during various conflicts, including battles against English privateers and other naval threats.
Iceland : Borgarvirki Fortress
is a volcanic plug in North Iceland that historically has been used as a fortress. It stands at 177 metres above sea-level, and 10 to 15 metres above its surroundings. Made of volcanic strata in a columnar shape, it is little wonder why early Vikings saw that it was a perfect place to utilise as a fortress. As such, Borgarvirki has not just been a natural feature for hundreds of years; it has been added to with walls, stairs and other amendments to further fortify it and make it habitable for humans. Two ruins of human habitations are on site, and there is a freshwater well within it.
Kazahkstan : Turkestan City Fortress
, Turkestan was founded in the year 490 by nomadic settlers. The cultures on the Eurasian Steppe would transform Turkestan, allowing it to prosper into the modern age. From a time when city walls and fortifications protected a powerful city to protecting traditions, cuisine, and spirituality.
Monaco : Prince's Palace of Monaco
, built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers. Since the end of the 13th century, it has been the stronghold and home of the Grimaldi family who first captured it in 1297.
Russia : Novgorod Kremlin
or Detinets, as it was called in Novgorod in old times, is the most ancient out of the preserved Kremlins in Russia (it was first mentioned in the chronicle of 1044). It was founded by Prince Vladimir, the eldest son of Yaroslav the Wise.
If I missed any, please feel free to leave a comment

Ceuta and Melilla : Melilla la Vieja
is the name of a large fortress which stands immediately to the north of the port in Melilla, one of Spain's Plazas de soberanía on the north African coast. Built during the 16th and 17th centuries, much of the fortress has been restored in recent years.
Gibraltar : The Moorish Castle
is the name given to a medieval fortification in Gibraltar comprising various buildings, gates, and fortified walls, with the dominant features being the Tower of Homage and the Gate House. Part of the castle itself also housed the prison of Gibraltar until it was relocated in 2010. The Tower of Homage is clearly visible to all visitors to Gibraltar; not only because of its striking construction, but also because of its dominant and strategic position.
Vatican City : Torre San Giovanni
(and city walls) is a round structure located on a hilltop in the westernmost tip of Vatican City, near Vatican Radio and overlooking the Vatican Gardens. The Medieval tower is located along an ancient wall built by Pope Nicholas III, but it fell into disuse at the beginning of the 16th century. It was rebuilt by Pope John XXIII in the early 1960s.

mapuo: Thank you for your feedback. I didn't add any countries that aren't at least partially in Europe. Just like Türkiye, both Kazakhstan and Russia are in Europe and Asia. I also focused on adding one suggestion per country that is currently missing from the European Castles set. I'm considering doing another request, including the existing suggestions and comments for new castles !
It would be great to make a new topic either focusing on Middle East or Asia as a whole for palaces, forts, and so on. If you need any help on that aspect, let me know! Also, it would be amazing if Slowly Team could start another continental prenium collection.

Kazaah: here is a topic for Asian temples https://feedback.slowly.app/stamp-requests/p/temples-explorer-in-asia

Kazaah: this list says that Turkey, Cyprus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia are in West Asia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Asia#Statistical_data
Kazakhstan is Central Asia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Asia#Territorial_and_regional_data
Kazaah
mapuo: You are right, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Türkiye are all transcontinental. For Armenia and Cyprus it's a little more complicated as they are both geographically in Western Asia, but culturally and geopolitically considered European and they are part of European organizations.

mapuo: You are right, Vaticano is missing too!

Is the building in Andorra more of a "church" than a "castle"? https://visitandorra.com/en/culture/church-of-sant-vicenc-d-enclar/
Also, classifying Iceland's Borgarvirki Fortress into this castle series feels a bit out of place because it is actually a "10-15 meter high ridge of columnar rock". https://www.visitnordic.com/en/attraction/borgarvirki-fortress
Actually, the Faroe Islands also have a similar situation. I believe there's no need to squeeze them into this series.

Madmax: Thank you for your feedback, still it might be a little unfair regarding those suggestions. Indeed, in the existing collection there are already different types : castles, fortresses, palaces... All in different shapes. This applies too for Skansin, which is in bad state.
For Borgarvirki Fortress. There are manmade walls and entrance to this natural defensive position, both rebuilt in 1949-1950. I believe it's a good showcase of differences that exist in Europe and also how landscape as been used.
Concerning the Castell de Sant Vicenç d'Enclar, the picture is indeed a fortified church, the restored part, still there was the castle.

Shiro from Slowly please include Spis castle in Slovakia
the wiki says it is one of the largest castles in central Europe, I was taught it is the largest one. I can submit more research if you are willing to consider it.
