The leopard cat is the most widely distributed species among small felids in Asia. It ranges from the border of China and Russia to Indonesia, from the Philippines to Pakistan, with leopard cats being found in various regions. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the largest global conservation alliance, regularly assesses species globally based on their risk of extinction. In the most recent evaluation, leopard cat populations were deemed stable and classified as "least concern," indicating potential threats but not at a severe level.
In contrast, in Taiwan, scholars estimate that there are only around 500 leopard cats left, possibly reaching the minimum viable population size. This means they are at risk of extinction due to diseases or natural disasters.
High levels of development in Taiwan's plains and low mountains have led to habitat fragmentation or loss, placing leopard cats in dire straits. Their population has shrunk dramatically due to habitat loss, leading to a significant reduction in genetic diversity. An analysis by a professor from National Taiwan University's Department of Animal Science and Technology found only seven mitochondrial DNA types out of 68 deceased leopard cats, indicating low genetic diversity on the island. Low genetic diversity may reduce their reproductive and disease resistance capabilities, ultimately leading to fewer offspring and possibly widespread extinction due to disease.
The Leopard Cat is currently the only remaining wild felid species in Taiwan, as the Formosan Clouded Leopard is extinct. Therefore, the Leopard Cat holds a certain level of significance.
