8 years after the invention of the airplane, the first official mail by plane was delivered by a French pilot in India on the 18th of February 1911. Before that, pigeons and hot air balloons were used.

This event marks the beginning of an era which has made exchanging letters much easier, covering great distances. As some of us here have pen pals using traditional mail, I think this is an important point in history worth having a stamp for.
