The kemençe is a traditional musical instrument native to Turkey’s Black Sea region. Its body is entirely carved from a single piece of wood—typically mulberry, black mulberry, maple, juniper, spruce, or plum—and depending on its type and characteristics, it is crafted within 3 to 15 days. The instrument is generally tuned in intervals of five half-steps, such as G [sol] – D [re] – A [la] or E [mi] – A [la] – D [re]. However, in rare cases, when performing tulum (bagpipe) melodies, it may be tuned in the form of A [la] – A [la] – D [re].
