It is the only architectural structure from the Byzantine era that still remains in Istanbul. Located in the district of Üsküdar, it has a history dating back to around 24 BC. Initially, it was built to control ships arriving from the Black Sea and to collect taxes. During the Ottoman period, it was used both for maritime control and as a lighthouse.
