Hardwick Hall is a famous State house, once owned by Bess of Hardwick. Bess had strong ties with Queen Elizabeth I, and her daughter was a candidate for Queen after the Queen's death. Bess also housed Mary Queen of Scott's as her husband was her protector. More recently, Hardwick Hall has been used as Malfoy Manor in the Harry Potter saga.
